Let's break things down by who you are

What's on this page

Clarifying our cost by user type
Academic publishers that are 'Diamond Open Access (OA)' are free for both authors and readers (and are often but not always Not-For-Profit, with stakeholders like university libraries covering their business costs). Our infrastructure supports this, but has been built as 'hybrid Diamond OA' at the authors' choice to address modern slavery in neoliberal academia. No other publisher has had the fortitude to bring this radical model to life because it requires centering researchers' labour, knowledge, and choices over publishers' profits to correct an endemic problem that academia continues to run on – and we do not accept that mere acknowledgment of this problem is enough. As with other commercial publishers our profits also come through the work of researchers, but unlike them they'll then go back to them. THIS is grassroots publishing – by the oppressed, for the oppressed. Having hailed from a generation of researchers prior to the introduction of neoliberalism to higher education we could envision a different way and believed it was possible to change.

Researchers

WE ARE FREE FOR YOU IF...
We are free for researchers to publish their work when they select the free Silver Plan, plus it's free to sign up. However, selecting one of our three low-cost paid plans helps keep more profits for members to be redistributed later when able (see CRPS/SRGS) rather than to investors who'll get equity in exchange for picking up our business costs when researchers select the free plan. That is, paying a small membership fee helps keep the platform 'community-owned', and we are 'Profit for Purpose' (PFP) with the purpose being our members. Yes, "reparative capitalism" against extractive capitalism and for economic democracy is radical! ... But only because it's fair.

Reviewers

WE ARE FREE FOR YOU AND...
We are free for reviewers (of course!), when they've been invited by the authors to provide thorough expert comment on their draft. It costs nothing for them to sign up to access the preprint, and they'll get a 30-day 10% discount off all their PDF full-text purchases as reward for providing robust and humane feedback.

Readers

WE ARE FREE FOR YOU IF...
We are free for readers if the authors have chosen not to paywall their PDF full-text, but if they do then the price will be affordable and transparent (just like everything about us is), and they'll be paying the rightful earners – those who actually did the research and wrote up the findings. It's also free to browse the abstracts on our database, and sign up when ready to deeply read and learn from their ethical and rigorous work. Researchers may also choose to donate earnings to the vulnerable communities they conducted research with and for.

Editors

WE ARE NOT FREE FOR YOU BUT...
We are not free for editors to advertise their service on our site because they're one of five sources of revenue that we depend on to cover our business costs, however all of our options are low-cost.

FYI, our five sources of revenue are: 1. Paid membership plans (researchers)
2. Smaller share per PDF sale (researchers)
3. In-house typesetting service (researchers)
4. Editors providing proofreading and/or copyediting which we don't do (YOU)
5. Sponsorships and donations (libraries and other organisations)

Libraries

WE ARE FREE FOR YOU BUT...
We are free for libraries and other organisations depending on research to inform their work, as we do not use a subscription model. However, in lieu of this a sponsorship or donation is most appreciated. Thank you for supporting the necessity of diverse publishing models, including those built against the exploitation of researchers without whom society has no credible knowledge. To iterate: our 'anti-slavery movement' in academic publishing is not against the 'open access movement' as authors are free to make their work free.
